Del Worsham: Driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car

Q1: 4.136 seconds, 302.82 mph
Q2: 4.008 seconds, 314.83 mph (Three bonus points for quickest of the session)
Q3: 6.909 seconds, 97.27 mph
Q4: 6.638 seconds, 95.79 mph

Qualifies: 1st – Worsham’s 4.008-second run in the second qualifying session is the quickest Funny Car run of the year so far in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, and is the ninth quickest of all time. The mark is also a career-best and Bristol Dragway track record for Worsham. The No. 1 spot for Worsham is the sixth of his career in Funny Car and 13th of his nitro racing career. The last and only other time a Kalitta Motorsports Funny Car qualified No. 1 was in Baton Rouge, La., in 1988 with the late Scott Kalitta in the driver’s seat. Worsham’s previous No. 1 Funny Car qualifier was with Al-Anabi Racing during the spring event in Las Vegas in 2010 (2011 Finals in Pomona, Calif., in Top Fuel).

Alexis Dejoria Racing DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (June 12, 2013)— As the Kalitta Motorsports Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car team roars into Thunder Valley today, they’re hoping history will repeat itself at Bristol Dragway- the picturesque track that cuts through the Appalachian Mountains.  It was at this race last year, the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, where the Patrón team had their very first taste of what it would be like to win a national NHRA event.

After three rounds of defeating seasoned veteran drivers, first-year Funny Car pilot Alexis DeJoria and her rookie team made it all the way to the final-round- an impressive feat for a novice team. While they ended up falling to Ron Capps in the finals, a runner-up finish proved to everyone that Team Patrón was not to be taken lightly.  At their very next race in Chicago they advanced into the semi-finals. Now, with a four week stretch of back-to-back racing on the horizon, kicking off with this weekend’s event in Bristol, Team Patrón hopes to get things off to a good start at the state-of-the-art facility in the foothills of Tennessee.

David GrubnicBRISTOL, Tenn., (June 11, 2013) – For David Grubnic, driver of the Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts Top Fuel dragster for Kalitta Motorsports, the goal for this weekend’s NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in scenic Bristol, Tenn. is to improve after a disappointing outing at the previous NHRA Mello Yello Drag racing Series event in Englishtown, N.J. two weeks ago.

Grubnic and the Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts team did not qualify for eliminations in Englishtown ending a 52-event streak of qualifying success. Grubnic missed making the 16-dragster eliminations field by a scant .001 seconds.

"We're all obviously disappointed with our non-qualifying performance in Englishtown however we must find the positives out of this situation,” Grubnic, a 50-year old resident of Bozeman, Mont., said. “The bottom line is there's no room for excuses and we need to be more focused and pay more attention to details. I believe this will help in turning our team around and gaining the performance we need to start going rounds and head us in the direction towards the winner’s circle. Our Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts team has proven we can win in the past, and it's time to prove we can do that again.”

Doug Kalitta BristolThree-Time Bristol Top Fuel Champ Kalitta Has Unfinished Business in Thunder Valley

BRISTOL, Tenn., (June 11, 2013) – Doug Kalitta, driver of the 10,000-horsepower “Big Red” Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster for Kalitta Motorsports, was within .02 seconds last year of claiming his fourth “Wally” trophy in Bristol Dragway’s Thunder Valley. At this season’s annual running of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, June 14-16, in Bristol, Tenn., Kalitta is determined to return to the final round and finish the job he started a year ago.

In last year’s final round of eliminations in Bristol, Kalitta reached the 1,000-ft. finish line stripe approximately seven feet behind his opponent. It was Kalitta’s best finish in last season’s NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, but that does not take away the sting of being so close to getting his 33rd visit to the Top Fuel’s winner’s circle.

“Losing in last year’s Bristol’s final was really tough, but I don’t dwell on it,” Kalitta, a 48-year old resident of Ann Arbor, Mich., said. “We’re very excited and encouraged about the way our Mac Tools dragster is performing this season and that’s what we have to focus on. We’ve had one of the top running cars all season, but we haven’t been able to pick up a win yet. Given our success in Bristol in the past, this weekend offers us a great opportunity to get our first win of 2013. We’re looking forward to it.”

Del Worsham BRISTOL, Tenn., (June 11, 2013) – Del Worsham, driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car for Kalitta Motorsports, knows how to race a 10,000-horsepower nitro-fueled Funny Car to the winner’s circle at Bristol Dragway – He’s done it twice. This weekend Worsham and his DHL “Yella Fellas” team will attempt to break through for their first win of the 2013 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn.

While racing for his family-owned team, Worsham took home the Funny Car “Wally” trophy in 2003 and then again in 2009 with Al-Anabi Racing. Worsham took over the controls of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car at the beginning of this season, and he and his team are looking to build on their semi-final finish momentum from the previous event in Englishtown, N.J. this weekend in “Thunder Valley”.
